Bike To Work Day!

Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 18th. The idea is to promote bicycle commuting as a viable and enjoyable way to get to and from work. The benefits of this activity are many, including reducing your carbon footprint, saving money on gas, and building in some exercise to your day to day routine. Given the distance many of us drive, and the traffic we encounter, the time it takes to ride isn't all that much more than the time you burn sitting in traffic, anyway. In many cities, it take less time to ride than to drive.

Spin is supporting this initiative by making ourselves a rendaevous point for people to gather and ride in together if they choose. We'll have someone at the shop by 7am to provide free basic mechanical support, coffee and baked goods, as well as offering a 15% discount to commuters between 7am and 9am, then again between 4pm and 6pm.

Others in the cycling community have similar initiatives, all aimed at making your first (or just your most recent) commute easy and enjoyable. Check out the Facebook page listing the various participants!

Leave the car at home Friday May 18th! (and every other day, too!)

Jackson on the American Ultra Cross Series Podium

Last weekend, a contingent of racers from Team Spin, SSSMST, and Spin Bike Shop's Mountain Bike Team travelled to Georgia to take part in Southern Cross the finale of the American UltraCross Championship Series. The course was brutal, with over 6200 feet of dirt road climbing in 50 miles. For added fun they began and ended the course with a ridiculously hard cx style course.

Most of us just went for the fun of it, although Greg Jackson (shop owner) was vying for the series overall. As it turns out, he ended up taking second in the series! Not bad for a washed up pro!

Chip Meek turned in a great performance, earning a 3rd place finish in the single speed class in what was a very close race. Someone must have neglected to tell him about the hour long climbs, or 20% grades, because he elected to do it with a 42/20 gear combination. Sick!

Sometimes "stock" just doesn't cut it

It's not that stock bikes are bad, they're extremely excellent, and we're proud to stock some of the best high end bikes available anywhere in the industry. But what happens when you want something more; something.....unique? You may already be familiar with Serotta, but now there's another option in K.Bedford Customs.

Kelly Bedford is known by many in the industry as one of it's master frame builders, and spent more than two decades working under the Serotta brand honing his skills. Much of their legendary craftmanship came directly from Kelly's hands. Now, he's operating under his own banner, and we're proud to partner with him as a dealer.

Drop by and check out Greg's new machine, a custom K.Bedford fat bike! A full 7lbs lighter than a stock Necromancer Pugsley, this thing is killer.

Trainer Sessions at Spin

Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! We're holding some trainer sessions here at the shop to help you burn off all that turkey and starting laying a foundation for spring. For those of you unfamiliar, the idea is for you to bring your own bike and trainer to the shop, and we hold a spinning class on your bike. The bike portion will consist of 60-75mins of quality trainer time that will incorporate a mix of drills, intervals, and recovery. After the bike portion ends, there will be 45mins of yoga lead by a certified yoga instructor. You will need a yoga mat or something its equivalent.

Read through for more details.

This three-session course will take you through the whole process. In session 1, you will learn theory and choose components based on your riding style and performance goals. Session 2 will be lacing your new hubs and rims with your choice of lacing pattern and spokes. And in session 3, it will all come together with tensioning and truing technique, where a hand built wheel truly stands out. This class is not for everyone, but if you want to become an integral part of what makes your bike better, and improve the performance and durability of your wheels, the way to do it right is to do it yourself. Availability of this class is limited, and dates will be set based on demand. Please contact our Service Manager, John, by email: john@spinbikeshop.com if you feel up to the challenge.

Sign up for these classes can be done by phone (216-521-7746), or you can email John, again at john@spinbikeshop.com. Classes need to be prepaid, at which point we will order your course materials. Refunds on tuition will be refundable up to 7 days prior to your class, with course manuals being non-refundable.

A minimum class size will need to be met for each date to go forward. In the event that this minimum is not met, dates will be cancelled and/or combined. If you are signed up for a cancelled date, you will be notified of any such change and given the option of moving dates or accepting a refund on any tuition or materials already purchased.  If any of this is too confusing, these classes probably aren't for you, anyway. ;)

CYCLISTS! You have to do this!

Cleveland Metroparks has embarked on a master planning effort.  They are seeking public input and will assess the public comments to determine their priorities and directions for the next decade.  While the park always must strike a balance with conservation and public use, they are currently willing to re-examine this balance.

This is OUR CHANCE as the active community to tell the parks what we think!

Wish we had MORE outdoor recreation in the Metroparks?  More cycling/running races and events?  Maybe camping, backpacking,  rock climbing, xcountry skiing, MOUNTAIN BIKING??  It’s time to ask!

Click here for more information on how you can take action.

Ride The Divide

Spin is proud to help present Ride The Divide, an award-winning feature-length documentary about the world’s toughest mountain bike race, when it premieres in Cleveland on Tuesday, January 25, at the Capitol Theatre. The movie was named the Best Adventure Film at the 2010 Vail Film Festival.

Ride The Divide will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre in Cleveland. Tickets are $15 at the door, and $10 in advance at www.IMAthlete.com/Events/RideTheDividemovie.

Please join us immediately following the film for an after party just a short walk down the street at Stone Mad Pub. We'll have door prizes, free pizza, and your first drink is on us!

The Willoughby Cyclocross Spectacular was a huge success again this year! Over 100 racers turned out to race in the most horrible conditions we've experienced so far this cross season. Steady rains Friday and Saturday morning turned the course into a complete mudfest which led to some exciting racing. Thanks to everyone who came out, we hope to see you all back next year!
